Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 1 – Cambodian Minister of Mines and Energy Keo Rattanak said that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has committed to transforming Cambodia into a model country for clean energy production, surpassing other ASEAN members in clean energy capacity.

Clean energy, derived from sources such as water, sunlight, and wind, is considered renewable energy. The global effort to achieve clean energy production aims to benefit the environment and the planet.

Currently, Cambodia boasts more than 62 per cent clean energy and aspires to increase this to 70 per cent by 2030.

In pursuit of this goal, Samdech Thipadei announced to halt the development of coal-fired power plants and initiated a comprehensive review to assess the possibility of shutting down existing facilities ahead of schedule. Additionally, the project for a 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Botum Sakor District, Koh Kong Province, has also been suspended.

"The world is striving for more clean energy, and Cambodia is taking decisive action. This commitment signifies that under the leadership of Premier Hun Manet, Cambodia not only seeks to meet its energy needs for economic and societal advancement but also upholds a profound responsibility to protect our planet," Keo Rattanak underscored.

Keo Rattanak added that the creation of clean energy not only benefits the environment and the planet but also attracts investment to Cambodia.
