Koh Kong (FN), Nov. 30 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that the ongoing progress in electricity development and widespread network access for the people constitutes a tangible achievement of the Royal Government of Cambodia.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Nov. 30) during a groundbreaking ceremony for a 150MW Stung Tatai Leu hydropower dam in Koh Kong province.
"Power generation has seen remarkable growth, increasing from 150 MW in 1998 to 4,495 MW by the end of 2022, an almost 30-fold rise. In 2008, there were no transmission and substation systems. However, today, there are 63 stations spanning 25 capitals and provinces, boasting almost 3,500 km of transmission lines and nearly 90,000 distribution lines derived from high voltage lines. This remarkable progress is attributed to the prevailing peace and accomplishments,” Samdech Thipadei underscored.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei also reiterated that the power sector stands as a top priority for the Royal Government of Cambodia in its commitment to fostering development. The 7th legislature of the National Assembly has reaffirmed the significance of identifying people, roads, water, electricity, and technology as pivotal priorities guiding Cambodia's developmental trajectory in the new phase. This underscores the continued importance of advancing the energy sector as a key agenda within Cambodia's socio-economic development policy.
The premier underscored that electricity is not merely a necessity for the people's daily lives but also a crucial asset for the advancement of industry, trade, agriculture, tourism, and various other sectors, significantly contributing to the overall economic growth.
Promoting sustainable economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for people throughout Cambodia hinges on developing a "sustainable, stable, quality, and more affordable power supply," as highlighted by Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet. Since achieving complete peace in 1998, under the leadership of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodia has continually organized and executed development plans for the electricity sector.
Over nearly a decade, the Royal Government invested in rehabilitating key electricity infrastructure, reforming the state entity Electricity of Cambodia, enacting laws, and establishing independent regulators. This comprehensive effort paved the way for private sector involvement and marked the genuine commencement of Cambodia's clear and authentic electricity sector development in 2008.
