Koh Kong (FN), Nov. 30 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet assigned the Ministry of Mines and Energy to lead and coordinate five crucial transitions in the energy sector, speaking on Thursday (Nov. 30) during a groundbreaking ceremony for a 150MW Stung Tatai Leu hydropower dam in Koh Kong province.
"For the seventh mandate, I entrusted the Ministry of Mines and Energy with the task of coordinating the transition of the energy sector to five major projects," the premier underscored.
The five projects are outlined as follow:
1. Promote the implementation of energy efficiency in accordance with the National Energy Efficiency Policy 2022-2030 approved by the Royal Government and the action plan.
2. Halt the development of coal-fired power plants and explore the potential early cessation of operations for existing coal-fired plants in Cambodia. This decision aligns with the announcement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26) made in November 2021 that Cambodia would halt the development of coal-fired power plants.
3. Update the master plan to increase the use of renewable energy sources.
4. Promote the use of electric vehicles (EV). To encourage EV adoption, Cambodia must assess and plan investments in the power supply network for charging stations, establish infrastructure for charging points accessible to consumers, and appropriately determine the cost of electric power for charging electric vehicles.
5. Engage in green energy diplomacy to attract support and concessional financing for sustainable development initiatives.
