Kampong Chhnang (FN), Nov. 22 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that in the future, Cambodia will build an additional railway connecting Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap and Banteay Meanchey provinces to promote more transport and reduce shipping cost.
The premier spoke on Wednesday (Nov. 22) during an inauguration for the official use of National Road No. 5 from Prek Kdam to Battambang and groundbreaking for the construction from Serei Sophorn to Poipet.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet underscored that in addition to the roads, we will further strengthen the railways, which will be the most important priority to strengthen the northern and southern railway lines. The northern line spans from Poipet to Phnom Penh, Pursat, Bat Doeng, and Battambang, while the southern line connects Phnom Penh, Takeo, Kampot, and Sihanoukville.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei underlined that in order to enhance existing transportation infrastructure for efficient and swift travel, aiming to decrease overall transportation costs. Cambodia, having successfully developed an expressway, now sets its sights on bolstering the railway project to further enhance transportation efficiency and reduce overall costs.
"The railway project should align with the plan to link the eastern part of the river to Poipet, Siem Reap, and Phnom Penh. Although plans for a high-speed railway are on the horizon, our immediate goal is to enhance the existing railway for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, particularly for freight transportation, thus reducing shipping costs”, Samdech Thipadei underscored
