Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to collaborate with relevant ministries and institutions in proactively addressing and eliminating activities that hinder fair competition within agricultural markets.

The premier spoke on Monday (Nov. 20) during the announcement of the 5th and 6th priority policy programs of the seventh-mandate Royal Government, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Samdech Thipadei said that Cambodia is a member of the World Trade Organization and government interventions will affect the global rules of trade. He also pointed out that the government's ability to intervene in pricing is limited, emphasizing that such interventions would be reserved for only the most essential strategic products and cannot be sustained indefinitely.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei explained that building an agricultural base with sustainability and ownership does not require constant intervention from the Royal Government, but the government has an obligation to make competition in the free market more equitable, fair and environmentally friendly.

"In implementing this strategy, I urge the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, along with all relevant ministries and institutions, to collaborate in eradicating any practices hindering farmers and the private sector from engaging in fair market competition," stated Samdech Thipadei.

The premier continued, with regard to this competition, the Royal Government cannot compel the private sector or the public to purchase any specific product.
