Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 17 – Although the Constitution of Cambodia designates Buddhism as the state religion, Cambodian citizens have the full freedom to practice any religion, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet spoke on Friday morning (Nov. 17) during a Preah Sokunveary Ceremony in Phnom Penh.

"Despite Buddhism being the state religion, the Constitution ensures freedom and the right to religious practice for all citizens in Cambodia. All Cambodian citizens are granted complete freedom of religion practice without discrimination. To date, no one in Cambodia has faced persecution for their religious beliefs," the premier underlined.

Cambodia took pride in the absence of religious conflicts, considering the challenges faced by many countries who are unable to guarantee such harmony.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei added that after the deliberation day, 7 January 1979, all religions in the kingdom have been afforded equal opportunities, rights, and attention.

Currently, there are 5,133 pagodas and 68,967 monks, mosques, and other places of worship in Cambodia.
