Paris (FN), Nov. 16 – Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni said that 32 years ago, after signing the 1991 Paris Peace Agreement, the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk called on UNESCO to collaboratively preserve the Angkor archaeological sites.
The king addressed the 4th Inter-governmental Conference for the Safeguarding and Development of Angkor during the 42nd Session of the General Conference of UNESCO, held on 15 November 2023, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.
"We named our conference 'Thirty Years or Fully Mature Age.' Thirty-two years ago, after signing the 1991 Paris Peace Agreement, the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk urged UNESCO to jointly preserve Angkor. After ascending the throne for the second time in 1993, my father aimed to inscribe Angkor on the World Heritage List," the king underscored.
According to the king, the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk strongly supported UNESCO, the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Site of Angkor (ICC-Angkor), and the French School of the Far East (EFEO) until his death. Cambodia also proposed to inscribe Preah Vihear, Sambo Prei Kuk, and Koh Ker on the World Heritage Lists.
