Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 15 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet voiced strong support for the Norea City Development Project and considered it as a unique development that transformed a formerly flood-prone landslides into a versatile multi-facility economic zone.
Samdech Thipadei underscored that the development of Koh Norea was a distribution of benefits to the people, not just to Oknha Pung Kheav Se, chairman and board of director for OCIC, or a certain group of people.
The premier spoke on Wednesday (Nov. 15) during an inauguration of Koh Norea Bridge in Phnom Penh.
"Of course, the construction on Koh Norea is unique as it involves the restoration of what has been lost. According to a 1929 map drawn by the French at the time, Koh Norea was large and situated directly in front of the Chaktomuk River. However, for decades it gradually shrank due to the current. After 1979, some people lived and farmed here, but due to the annual water flow, by 2005, it had completely submerged. This means that where we are sitting right now is part of the restoration," Samdech Thipadei emphasized.
The premier added, "in other places, there is existing land, and it simply requires further development. However, for this particular place, we had to restore it entirely. [...] Some people say it's a land reclamation, but it is, in fact, the restoration of what had vanished, making it more vibrant. This area is more than 100 hectares. Covering over 100 hectares, this region was historically less habitable, primarily engaged in agriculture and fishing. Presently, it has undergone a remarkable transformation into a multi-facility economic zone."
Meanwhile, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also expressed his gratitude to the Phnom Penh Capital Authority for facilitating the development of Koh Norea.
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei underscored the vital role of infrastructure as the lifeblood of the nation. The Royal Government consistently places a high priority on the development of connecting infrastructure, with a special focus on roads, as a key element in government policy.
Norea City is a satellite city developed by OCIC, with a budget of more than $2.5 billion. Norea City is located within the heart of the Capital city, Phnom Penh, developed on 125 hectares of land. Our goal for the investment and development is to create a center for international and national commercial hub including luxury residential area. The most iconic landmark of the city is the 555-meter skyscraper facing the Mekong River and Bassac River.
