Kampong Speu (FN), Nov. 10 – Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet ordered the armed forces to strengthen their capabilities on counterterrorism, and remain vigilant to effectively combat the crime.
The premier presided over the celebration of the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Special Forces Command, held on Friday (Nov. 10) in Kampong Speu province.
Samdech Thipadei added that terrorism is unpredictable; therefore, it is necessary to strengthen counter-terrorism capabilities and be responsive.The premier also instructed the Ministry of Defense and all military commanders to pay attention to cybersecurity threats.
"In each era, we encounter distinct risks and challenges," Premier Hun Manet underlined. "While the current conventional threat of engaging in warfare with large forces in Cambodia is comparatively lower, our focus should shift towards non-traditional security risks. These encompass combating terrorism, addressing criminal activities, and mitigating diverse disasters and system security threats. All institutions, particularly the security forces and the military, must remain vigilant, continuously assess, and adapt our structures to effectively respond."
"While we sincerely hope such events do not transpire, the reality is that no one can confidently predict the absence of terrorism on Cambodian soil," said the premier. "We have witnessed several instances where we successfully thwarted terrorist attempts on our territory through proactive prevention and intervention measures."
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also underscored that additional equipment is required for enhancing disaster response capabilities. The Royal Government is prioritizing strengthening the army's capacity for national defense.
Addressing the lack of training facilities for parachuting troops, a training school in Oral was established with Samdech Techo Hun Sen's support for counterterrorism and special forces training. The government also aims to modernize national defense through infrastructure, training, and equipment upgrades.
