Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 26 – Russian ambassador to Cambodia Anatoly Borovik pledged to encourage Russian companies to invest in Cambodia.

Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet received a courtesy call by the Russian ambassador on Thursday morning (Oct. 26) at the Peace Palace.

Taking this occasion, the Russian ambassador congratulated the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) on its landslide support in the 2023 general election and congratulated Samdech Thipadei on his recent appointment. The ambassador is confident that the Russia-Cambodia friendship will grow stronger, in addition to the existing good cooperation during the long history of diplomatic ties for the past 67 years.

In addition, the ambassador also thanked Cambodia for its role as an ASEAN-Russia facilitator to further enhance ASEAN-Russia dialogue partners.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed the presence of the Russian ambassador as an opportunity for discussions on Cambodia-Russia bilateral relations and recalled the good cooperation between the two countries. Particularly, when the former Soviet Union supported Cambodia in rebuilding the nation after the Pol Pot regime. In addition, the premier affirmed that Cambodia's foreign policy remains unchanged.

Both sides praised the results of bilateral relations in the past, especially the exchange of visits by senior leaders in both the legislature and the executive branch. Both sides planned to arrange the visit of the president of the Senate of Cambodia to the Russian Federation after the new Senate election, as well as exchange visits in the field of national defense and security, as reflected by the plan to dock a Russian ship in Sihanoukville in November 2023.

Regarding trade and investment cooperation, Russia also pledged to encourage more Russian investment companies to invest in Cambodia, especially in the automotive and machinery industries, agricultural machinery, medical equipment, and information technology. As for the future direction, besides the existing cooperation, the discussions also touched on joint commitments to further strengthen and expand cooperation in tourism and education, as well as other issues for the common interest of both countries and peoples.
