Kampong Cham (FN), Oct. 25 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet said once the "Funan Techo Canal" project is completed, it will significantly contribute to increasing the capacity and efficiency of transportation from the provinces along the Tonle Sap Lake and Mekong River to the sea, and improving the livelihoods of the people living along the river.
The premier spoke on Wednesday morning (Oct. 25) during his meeting with more than 12,000 workers in Kampong Cham province.
On 17 October 2023, Cambodia signed an agreement to allow China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) to conduct a feasibility study on the "Funan Techo Canal" project.
Tonle Bassac Navigation Road and Logistics System Project was named the "Funan Techo Canal" project at the 6th Plenary Session of the National Assembly on 19 May 2023. Later on 7 June 2023, the government decided to establish an inter-ministerial commission to implement the project.
It is the first historic project in Cambodia's waterway transport sector to connect the Mekong River system and the sea route. The project seeks to elevate the development of socio-economic activities to a higher level, and provide appropriate solutions to challenges and obstacles of the water transport sector.
