Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 4 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet reaffirmed that under the leadership of the new mandate Royal Government, Cambodia’s foreign policy, particularly bilateral relations between Cambodia and the United Kingdom (UK), will remain unchanged.

Premier Hun Manet received a courtesy call by British ambassador to Cambodia Dominic Williams on Wednesday morning (Oct. 4) at the Peace Place.

Dominic Williams congratulated Samdech Thipadei on his recent appointment as Cambodian prime minister and the recent achievements of the Royal Government, including the participation in the international summits within the ASEAN framework and the United Nations (UN).

In addition, the ambassador also congratulated on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Cambodia-UK diplomatic ties as the bilateral relations are growing in every sector. In fact, in 2023, in the education sector, three British schools were launched in Cambodia. In addition, Cambodia and UK have successfully launched the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), a new trade preferences scheme. At the same time, the UK vowed to further support the demining mission in Cambodia until 2025.

Taking this occasion, ambassador also requested to study for the feasibility of cooperation in two sectors in the Pentagonal Strategy, namely the green economy and the renewable energy sector. In addition, Cambodia-UK cooperation will further grow in every sector, including politics.

Dominic Williams also noted the success of the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders and considered this was the end of a dark page in Cambodia's history.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei thanked the ambassador, as well as the UK Government and the people for promoting the development of cooperation between the two countries, such as the assistance in the fight against COVID19, support for the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders, commitment to further assisting the kingdom in the demining mission.

Premier Hun Manet also thanked for the launch of the DCTS and requested the UK to examine the possibility of importing Cambodia's agricultural products, and textiles and footwear.

Lastly, Samdech Thipadei also reaffirmed Cambodia's support for the green economy and renewable energy, and expressed satisfaction with future cooperation in these areas. Samdech Thipadei hoped that Cambodia-UK cooperation would continue to flourish in all areas, especially in the trade sector, allowing Cambodia to expand its export market to the UK.

Regarding the national defense, Samdech Thipadei also hoped for closer cooperation with the UK in training, joint military exercises, and docking.
