Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 3 – Cambodian prime minister, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said that the current minimum wage for workers in Cambodia is higher than in any other country in the region, speaking on Tuesday (Oct. 3) during a meeting with nearly 20,000 workers in Phnom Penh.

Samdech Thipadei highlighted that the comparison was made only in 2023. Moreover, some countries do not increase wages for workers in 2024.

"We are talking about the minimum wage in 2023. A minimum wage of USD 200 for our workers is already higher than most of these countries: Laos USD 90, Vietnam from USD 154 to USD 198, Indonesia from USD 130 to USD 300, Bangladesh USD 74, Burma USD 69, India from USD 134 to USD 195, and Sri Lanka USD 40,” the premier underlined.

According to premier Hun Manet, the Royal Government of Cambodia is committed to increasing the wages of workers every year, no matter how much. Apparently, at the time when Cambodia was facing COVID19, the Royal Government of Cambodia was still negotiating for the raise.

The USD 4 increase in 2024 wages may seem small for workers, but it is high for employers. Some countries, who are our competitors, has yet increased wages for their workers, the premier added.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei considered that the increase in the minimum wage for 2024 is based on a sharing spirit during critical moment.

On 28 September 2023, the Royal Government of Cambodia announced the increase of minimum wages for workers in textile, garment, footwear, and travel products and bags sectors for an additional USD 4. Therefore, the minimum wages will be USD 204 per month in 2024.
