Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 3 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet reaffirmed that the Royal Government will not increase the electricity price, despite the government having to pay millions of dollars a month in order to ease the expense burden of citizens nationwide, including the workers.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Oct. 3) during a meeting with nearly 20,000 workers in Phnom Penh.

"In the past few years, some countries increased the price of electricity. Viet Nam and Thailand did, and Singapore a few days ago announced the increase as well. However, in Cambodia, we do not increase it, even though the government loses millions of dollars monthly. The government is willing to do this to maintain citizens' livelihoods," the premier underscored.

In addition, Samdech Thipadei also mentioned the decision of the Royal Government to lower the electricity price for enterprises in industrial and agricultural sectors. About 20,000 enterprises have benefited from the discount.

Taking this occasion, Samdech Thipadei urged the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority and Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) to continue to work on securing access to clean water and electricity for workers in accordance with the program set by the Royal Government.

In 2022, Cambodia lost nearly USD 200 million in terms of revenue from electricity due to the Russia-Ukraine conflicts and sanctions.
