Phnom Penh (FN), Sep. 1 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Manet said that the Royal Government of the 7th legislature considered providing social protection benefits to workers in the informal economy as well as self-employed individuals, speaking on Friday (Sep. 1) during a meeting with nearly 20,000 workers in Takhmau city, Kandal province.

Hun Manet said, "the Royal Government has also considered registering people, who are employed in the informal sector in the social protection system in order for them to receive various benefits.”

Manet urged relevant ministries and institutions to make efforts by presenting social protection benefits, so that people will volunteer to register.

On that occasion, the premier also made three recommendations to finance minister Aun Porn Moniroth as follows:

1. Consider simplifying registration procedures and fees.

2. Waive fines and debts so that they do not have to worry about tax penalties when registering.

3. Review tax incentives, exemptions from fines and penalties, or tax liabilities.

Manet continued, "tourism sector is a key priority in the registration of workers in the informal economy." He advised tourism minister Sok Soken to work with private companies in order to assists workers in tourism sector.

In addition, Manet will also discuss and exchange views with the private sector and business owners in the upcoming Royal Government-Private Sector Economic Forum in November 2023.
