Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 19 – Cambodia Fresh Farm is a fish farm that has a processing plant in Phnom Penh, and a breeding farm in Kandal province.

It was founded with 100% investment from a Japanese company, Megatrons Investment (Cambodia) Co., Ltd (formerly Rainbow Progress Enterprise Co., Ltd).

The fish farm was established in 2014 and put into operation in 2017. As of 2023, it has 20 fish ponds, a processing plant, a water filtration system, an office, and other facilities on a 4.5-hectare site.

The owner Shirayama Yuichi has launched a new brand called "SHIRAYAMA FARM" for overseas markets. The company plans to export processed Cambodian tilapia, which used Japanese aquaculture and hygiene technologies.

The local Japanese manager Kubota Mitsuhiro said, "when we first started farming, we were asked by Cambodians why we did not raise catfish. Indeed, catfish is a popular fish in Cambodia, and is considered a national dish. We were often asked why we chose to farm tilapia, which is relatively inexpensive and not as popular. Tilapia had a lot of potential.”

SHIRAYAMA FARM, cooperating with AMEKAZE Cambodia, will be expanding its product line to include a variety of products made with Cambodian ingredients, including tilapia flakes, smoked tilapia, and salt-fermented tilapia.

"Tilapia also has the potential to be used as fish meal for fish feed," said Kubota. "We breed tilapia without using any drugs, and we make fish meal from the scraps of frozen fillets. We have already received inquiries from Japanese feed manufacturers."

Kubota continued, in the future, we would like to work with the Cambodian Aquaculture Association to raise awareness of tilapia and contribute to the development of Cambodia's fisheries industry, together with Cambodian staff and the Cambodian people.
