The premier spoke on Friday morning (Jul 14) during an inauguration ceremony of the rebuilt Monuments aux Morts in Phnom Penh.

Premier Hun Sen pointed out that the rebuilt of this monument makes Phnom Penh Capital, the 589-year-old political, economic and cultural center of the Kingdom of Cambodia, a proud historical capital with a memorable cultural heritage for every generation.

"On behalf of the Royal Government, I would like to hand over this significant new achievement to the Phnom Penh Capital Administration to manage and maintain in order to create a beautiful city and environment for the people as well as both national and international tourists," the premier underscored.

Taking this occasion, Samdech also allowed the Embassy of the French Republic in Cambodia to use the rebuilt Monuments aux Morts to hold memorial services.

The Monuments aux Morts is a memorial to the Cambodian soldiers who lost their lives during World War I in France. The monument was built in 1925 and was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975.

The decision to rebuild the monument was taken by prime minister Hun Sen after a request by land management minister Chea Sophara.
