Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 30 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen reaffirmed that the amendment to the election law will not deprive people of their rights, but to ensure smooth process for people to exercise their rights.
The premier spoke on Friday (Jun 30) during his meeting with nearly 7,000 workers in Pursat province.
His remarks came after a small number of political parties and civil society organisations criticised the preparation of amendments to the election law.
“Legal measures are being taken not to deprive citizens of their rights, but to ensure smooth process for people to exercise their rights,” the premier underscored.
On that occasion, Samdech added that the constitution and the law do not stipulate that the Royal Government or the National Assembly must consult with civil society prior to the amendments.
The initiative to amend the election law was made in response to opposition groups’ movement, calling people not to go to vote.
The draft law on the amendment of the election law is designed for individuals who wish to stand for election, which stated that they must go to vote before they could stand for election.
The draft law was approved by the National Assembly on 19 June 2023 and the Senate on 29 June 2023.
