Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 13 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said the upcoming amendment to the election law is a slap in the face to opposition leaders’ calling for the people not to go to vote on 23 July 2023.
The premier spoke on Tuesday (June 13) during his meeting with some 20,000 workers in Phnom Penh.
The campaign was recently organized by an overseas former opposition member Ry Kea, claiming that "it is my right to not go to vote. If I am still forced to go, I will cross the ballot paper [making it invalid]."
The premier added that the amendment is the same as in Thailand. If one does not go to vote, one would not be able to stand as candidate at elections, including communal council election and general election.
Samdech continued, interior minister Sar Kheng and justice minister Koeut Rith are preparing to submit the proposal to amend the election law to the National Assembly for approval, which will be done before the start of 2023 election campaign.
