Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 12 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said in a voice message on Monday (June 12), ordering interior minister Sar Kheng and justice minister Koeut Rith to study and amend laws to remove right to stand as candidate at elections for any individual who does not go to vote.

"Anyone who wishes to stand as a candidate at elections must be a good citizen of the nation in a democratic society, starting from exercising the right to vote,” the premier underlined.

“In this sense, any individual who does not go to vote without a valid reason will be considered to have lost the right to stand as a candidate at elections, but they still have the right to vote as a citizen,” the premier added.

Looking at Thailand, some parties have lost members at the parliament and right to stand for elections because they did not fulfill their obligations to go to the polls, the premier added.

If one does not go to vote, one would not be able to stand as candidate at elections, including communal council election and general election.

In the voice message, Samdech stated that the amendment of the law is necessary and if any person in any party does not go to the poll on 23 July 2023, they will not be able to stand for any election in the future.

Samdech continued, the amendment would be in line with the Article 34 new of the Cambodian constitution and it will not affect the people's right to vote.
