Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 27 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen announced that residents living in the dolphin conservation areas of Kratie and Stung Treng provinces can now use small fishing nets.
The premier spoke at the opening of new training courses in 2023 of the Royal School of Administration, held on Thursday (Apr 27) at Diamond Island.
"Regarding the dolphin conservation areas in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces, many dolphins died respectively because of fishing nets. When I presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of a bridge construction in Kratie province, I issued a sub-decree banning all types of fishing gears,” stated the premier.
Samdech continued, “however, after implementing it [the existing sub-decree] from February to April 2023, the dolphins still died and it also has negative impacts on the residents' livelihoods. As a result, I decided to repeal the sub-decree.”
Despite having the sub-decree to be repealed, the premier urged to strengthen the banning of large nets or electrofishing in the areas.
