Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 24 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen said that the food shortage would not happen in Cambodia amidst the current world situation, for Cambodia has a rice surplus of more than six million tons annually.
The premier spoke at the closing of an annual meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, held on Friday (Mar 24) at the ministry.
Samdech recalled implementing the "Promotion of Paddy Production and Rice Export to 1 Million Ton" in 2010. As a result, Cambodia achieves abundant rice production to avoid rice shortage. However, Cambodia is unsuccessful in exporting 1 million tons due to justification and market problems, such as the need to invest in rice mills, warehousing, and capital reserves.
Samdech recalled that in 2002, Cambodia still experienced a food shortage. Fortunately, Cambodia received 20,000 tons of rice from India.
