Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 24 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen advised Cambodian minister of education Hang Chuon Naron to negotiate with Lao's Ministry of Education to give stipends for Cambodian students in dollars in response to exchange rate fluctuations.
The premier spoke at the graduation of more than 7,000 students of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, held on Friday (Feb. 24) at Diamond Island Exhibition and Convention Center.
"When I met our [Cambodian] students who are studying in Laos, I understand their struggles. The main challenge is the stipends. Although both sides agree to offer USD 180 per month for scholarship students, the Laos counterpart gives stipends in Laos currency (Kip). The Laos currency is depreciated, causing the Cambodian students to receive only about USD 90 per month. Thus, I advise giving stipends in dollars for both sides," the premier underscored.
