Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 23 – On 21 February an auspicious reception was held at the Sunway Hotel in Phnom Penh, to mark the upcoming Russian Day of Military Glory – Defender of the Fatherland Day (23 February). This date was first celebrated in 1919 on the anniversary of the establishment of the Red Army, and got its current name in 2006.
On the assignment of Cambodian national minister Tea Banh, permanent secretary of state general Neang Phat took part in the reception as the main guest, and was welcomed by ambassador of the Russian Federation Anatoly Borovik.
The reception was attended by the leadership of the Ministry of National Defense of the Kingdom, Command of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, graduates of relevant Russian/Soviet universities, as well as representatives of the military-diplomatic corps accredited in Phnom Penh.
In his remarks, capt. (Navy) Vitaly Luchshev explained the historical roots of the holiday, honoring those who protect the Russia’s security, and who died for independence of their Motherland.
Recalling the significant contribution of the Soviet people in fighting Nazism during the Second World War (1939-1945), he noted to destructive role of the United States in the anti-constitutional coup in Kiev in 2014, resulted in coming to power of neo-Nazi forces, as well as in fueling the crisis around Ukraine.
Together with director of International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of National Defence LtGen Phat Vibolsopheak, he praised the development of ties between the defence institutions of Russia and Cambodia.
The guests enjoyed the artistic performances and a video about the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
