Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 30 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen announced that the kingdom will host Angkor Sangkranta event in the upcoming Khmer New Year 2023 after COVID19 eased.
The premier spoke at the closing ceremony of the 3rd National Games and the 1st Cambodian Paralympic Games 2022, held on Wednesday evening (Nov 30) at the Morodok Techo National Stadium.
"I would also like to confirm to my compatriots nationwide that in the upcoming Khmer New Year 2023, we will resume celebrating Angkor Sangkranta. Hopefully, our Lbokator martial arts will become an important symbol of Angkor Sangkranta," the premier underscored.
Due to COVID19 outbreak, the kingdom has halted the celebration of Angkor Sangkranta for two consecutive years.
"Angkor Sangkranta is held aligning with Khmer New Year that lasts for three days in the mid-April. Khmer New Year is celebrated to mark the end of harvesting season and the beginning of rainy season, during which farmers who dominate Cambodian society enjoy the fruits from their labors and get ready to enter the New Year based on Buddhist calendar. The event is aimed to strengthen the solidarity of Cambodian families, to preserve Cambodian traditions and customs, to show off Cambodian culture to the world, and to boost the tourism industry, as million of tourists flocked to experience the enriched Khmer culture in Siem Reap."
