Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 1 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen requested the United States to review the agreement on the deportation of convicted Cambodian people living in the United States.
The premier’s request was made during his meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Ruth Sherman on Tuesday.
The Royal Government of Cambodia and the US Government signed an agreement to repatriate Cambodians from the United States in 2002. Under this agreement, the US government will deport any Cambodians convicted of crimes.
However, at the end of 2017, the repatriation failed as the US did not comply with Cambodia's request to amend some of the terms of the agreement.
Premier Hun Sen has often objected the deportation and considered such action separated Cambodian families living in the US.
The premier’s personal secretary Eang Sophalleth confirmed that in a meeting, Prime Minister Hun Sen asked Joe Biden Administration to reconsider the terms. In response, the US Deputy Secretary of State agreed to pass the premier's request to President Biden.
