Jakarta (FN), Apr. 24 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that Cambodia is committed to non-interference into Myanmar's internal affairs, but the Kingdom is ready to join ASEAN to help Myanmar solve the current political crisis.
His remark was made at ASEAN leader’s meeting on 24 April 2021 in Jakarta, Indonesia, chaired by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mujahideen of Brunei Darussalam.
Myanmar has been embroiled in a political crisis since early February after the military arrested Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of National League of Democracy, and other party leaders.
As a member of ASEAN Community, Cambodia has been closely following the situation in Myanmar. Cambodia has supported the «ASEAN Chairman's Statement on the Developments in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar» issued on 1 February 2021, and the «Chair's Statement on the Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting» issued on 2 March 2021, that were made in good faith to support a peaceful solution to the current crisis in Myanmar.
«Cambodia supports the coordinating role of the ASEAN Chair, as well as the ASEAN Secretary-General and other ASEAN members, in a positive, peaceful and constructive manner. To help Myanmar resolve the crisis and prevent the situation from deteriorating, we can consider using the ASEAN Troika to facilitate the negotiations between the parties» the premier said.
Prime Minister reiterated that Cambodia is ready to join other ASEAN member states to assist Myanmar on her path to normalcy in any role and in any format that are in line with ASEAN principles – in our ASEAN way - and that are agreeable to all.
