Kandal (FN), Oct. 7 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has asked for understanding from civil servants and armed forces for suspending their salary increases in 2021 due to the uncertain economy amidst COVID19 crisis.

His remark was made Wednesday at the grand opening of the Chinese-firm Prince Manor Entertainment Center with USD 85 million investment in Kandal’s Kien Svay district.

"I told Aun Pornmoniroth [Minister of Economy and Finance] that the wage increases for 2021 will be suspended due to economic uncertainty. So, I would like to apologize beforehand. Civil servants of the armed forces will receive the salary at the same rate, and that the bonuses for New Year and Pchum Ben holidays remain the same,” the premier stated.

"As a matter of concern, we will increase the wages of the retirees and veterans who have retired with lower salaries along time ago. We spend USD 10 million a year to reduce the gap between early retirees and later retirees [...] That means we never forget the veterans and retirees,” he added.

In order to improve the living standards of civil servants, doctors, teachers and armed forces, the Royal Government has set a salary increase twice a year, January and April.
