Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 2 – Within the first six months of 2020, Cambodia earned more than USD 264 million from exporting 397, 660 tonnes of rice, an increased of 41 percent comparing to the same period in 2019, according to Cambodia Rice Federation's report Fresh News obtained on 2 July 2020.
In term of market destinations, China is the main source of Cambodian rice export, representing 37 percent of the total, generating in the total amount of 147,949 tonnes. European Union and England are the second biggest Cambodian rice export market destination, representing 34 percent, accounting for 135,576 tonnes.
Cambodia exported to ASEAN members amounted at 52,987 tonnes, 13 percent of Cambodia’s total exports. Malaysia holds the biggest Cambodian rice export market, accounting for 21,904 tonnes. Other destinations take the remainder of 16 percent, 61,148 tonnes, having Gabon and Australia as the biggest market destinations among that.
Regarding the rice varieties in six months of Cambodian rice export, fragrant rice accounts for 77 percent of the total volume, generating in the amount of 306,786 tonnes, increased by 33 percent comparing to the same period in 2019. In particular, white rice and other rice accounts for 23 percent of total exports, increased by almost 80 percent comparing to the same period in 2019 due to the high demand for these varieties amid COVID-19 pandemic.
For June 2020 market, Cambodia exports 13,566 tonnes to EU, equal 33 percent of total Cambodia's export market, and export 11,124 tonnes to China, equal 27 percent of the market share. ASEAN and other market destinations accounts for 40 percent or 16,873 tonnes. In total, Cambodia's rice export revenue for June 2020 is approximately USD 23.7 million.
For the average rice export price calculating at the port, the average price of premium fragrant rice is USD 900, fragrant rice is USD 760, white rice (soft cooking) is USD 520.
