Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 2 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia (MoFAIC) has invited the Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh to discuss the makeshift camps erected by Viet Nam along the border between Kandal province and An Giang province (Viet Nam).
Cambodia requested the Vietnamese side to demolish all the 31 camps as soon as possible, according to the ministry’s press release dated on 2 June 2020.
“In a meeting between Secretary of State Eat Sophea and Vietnamese ambassador, Cambodia requests Vietnam to remove all the makeshift camps as soon as possible and maintain the status quo on the disagreed border areas until agreements reached between Border Commission of the two countries in order to transform the border regions to zones of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development for the harmony of the two people,” said the press release.
Cambodia-Vietnam share border of 1,270 km. The border was a battlefield between the late 1960s and 1970s. To date, Cambodia and Vietnam have achieved 84 percent of border demarcation and work to accomplish 100 percent in order to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty.
