Phnom Penh (FN), May 1 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen appealed to all journalists to avoid broadcasting misleading, fabricating and inciting news as the Kingdom and the rest of the world are fighting against the pandemic Covid-19, according to his letter, celebrating 27th World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2020.

“I urge journalists to actively combat fake news by broadcasting the truth on any media outlets and social media, so that people are informed with updated situation,” the premier wrote.

”At the time of crisis, journalists shall carefully inform, update, and verify official information on Covid-19 in accordance with press release from the Ministry of Health,” he added.

He also called on journalists to educate the public to prevent the spread of the disease, including maintaining social distancing, practicing hygiene, and following the instructions issued by the Ministry of Health.

The premier took note that while Cambodia and the rest of the world are attacked by the pandemic, some people spread false information, aimed at causing social chaos, and putting the blame on the Royal Government of Cambodia.

The premier appreciated the hardwork of journalists in disseminating updated information regarding local and international situations in the field of politics, economics, and other social issues related to people’s daily lives on a timely manner.

Treating media as an indispensable partner of the Royal Government, he urged the press to avoid broadcasting misleading, fabricating and inciting news which results in discrimination against race, religion, and political tendency; and avoid publications that led to public disorder, national disunity, and wars with foreigners.

Premier Hun Sen also reminded journalists to embrace a new slogan, “do not violate rights of other people, do not distort the truth” in order to enhance their professionalism.
