Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 15 – Cambodia-China, the ironclad friends, kicked off their fourth annual joint “Golden Dragon” military exercise under the theme “counter-terrorism and humanitarianism,” at military training site in Chumkiri district, in Cambodia’s Kampot province.
The opening ceremony, held on Sunday, was presided over by Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) Commander-in-Chief General Vong Pisen and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian.
2020 marks the fourth Golden Dragon Military Exercise between China and Cambodia, following the first in 2016. The training has involved mine clearance, destruction of unexploded ordnance or chemical weapons, fighting with tanks, rescuing hostages, and humanitarian affairs.
Golden Dragon Military Exercise aims to strengthen the alliance of both military forces in combating terrorism; maintaining stability; assisting in disaster relief; and, in a general sense, safeguarding peace and security nationally and globally.
According to Ith Sarath, RCAF deputy commander-in-chief, the exercises are in the form of military brigade, intervention, including armoured vehicles, tanks and artillery reinforcements. The participating troops from the two countries will have training of such professional subjects as anti-terror equipment operating, light weapons live-fire practice, unarmed wrestle, simulated airborne landing, penetrating maneuver, man hunting and searching.
Cambodia has a long and strong defence relationship with China, given that Beijing is Phnom Penh’s largest donor of military aids.
