Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 21 – Cambodia’s Ministry of Health on Friday issued a press release, confirming that the 83-year-old American woman from Westerdam is negative of Covid-19.
The ministry said Malaysia’s findings were “unusual”.
Cambodia reacted to Malaysia after the American woman who tested positive for coronavirus in Malaysia is now clear of the disease.
“Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said on Friday (Feb 21) that the 83-year-old woman, who is currently being treated at the Sungai Buloh Hospital, has been tested repeatedly for Covid-19, with the results showing that she is clear of the virus,” reported local media.
Cambodia’s Health Ministry wrote in the press release on Friday, “the irregularities in the results announced by Malaysian authorities have caused fear, confusion, and discrimination among Westerdam passengers.”
“Passengers who do not carry the Covid-19 virus have been restricted for several days and missed their flights back home, wasting their time and unnecessary spendings. On the other hand, it has affected the honour and dignity of humanity and the country, causing a serious humanitarian crisis,” the ministry continued.
The Ministry of Health reiterated that in close cooperation with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the US Centers for Disease Control (USCDC), the Pasteur Institute in Cambodia, relevant embassies and others involved in health operations, the Ministry has found the remaining 1,580 passengers and crews “negative” of Covid-19.
The ministry concluded that the case of the 83-year-old woman undergoing treatment for Covid-19 in Malaysia was unusual.
The Ministry of Health also confirmed that no Cambodians have been found to have the new coronavirus (Covid-19) as of 21 February 2020.
The ministry said it will continue to cooperate with the Malaysian Ministry of Health in responding to and preventing the spread of Covid-19 virus in the country as well as in the region.
