Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 31 – Starbucks Cambodia announced that they have eliminated single-use plastic straws from all stores by providing alternative paper straws option since November 2019, in line with global commitment to eliminate plastic straws by end of 2020.
The new paper straws are made from responsibly sourced paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) available in standard sizes for iced beverages and large sizes for Frappuccino blended beverages that are available across all Starbucks Cambodia stores.
“At Starbucks Cambodia, we not only offer the best coffee experience to our customers but also to ensure that our customers can enjoy their favorite beverages in a sustainable manner,” said Por Lim, General Manager at Coffee Concepts Cambodia Ltd.
“Sustainability has always been our top priority and our baristas always encourage our customers to care about environment together by serving their beverages with in-store cups or providing USD 0.30 discount on any drink when customers bring their own reusable cups with them” Por Lim added.
In April 2019, which is Starbucks Global Month of Good, Starbucks Cambodia, with support from The Asia Foundation Cambodia, teamed up to organise environmental awareness raising sessions among young students in Kandal province elementary school to better equip them with knowledge of the negative impacts of waste on themselves and the society, and solutions including reduction of waste creation, waste recycling, and tree planting activities.
Globally, Starbucks chief executive officer Kevin Johnson announced on 21 January 2020 a multi-decade commitment to be a resource-positive company, aspiring to give more than it takes from the planet. The announcement included science-based preliminary targets for the reduction of carbon emissions, water use and waste by 2030, and outlined five strategies the company has identified to move toward them.
