Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 17 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has recommended Smart Axiata, one of the leading telecommunications in Asia, to consider setup internet access in public schools and hospitals for teachers and students to do research, gather knowledge, and learn about social issues.

The recommendation was made while receiving a courtesy call from Tan Sri Jamaludin, president and group chief executive officer of Axiata Group Berhad, held Tuesday at the Peace Palace Phnom Penh.

Tan has informed the premier that Smart's investment does not only aim for profit, but corporate social responsibility. The company has significantly contributes to education, community sports, health, tech innovation, and environment in Cambodia, according to Eang Sophalleth, prime minister’s personal secretary.

“The company works to expedite the proliferation of digital and ICT literacy; promote STEM education and healthy lifestyle; and promote technopreneurship and digital startup,” Sophalleth quoted Tan.

The premier, in response, thanks Smart for the contributions to the kingdom and recommended the companies to expand its internet coverage to the provinces and at public schools and hospitals for people to use internet for knowledge and social awareness.

Smart is one of the largest mobile operator in Cambodia, investing about USD 1.4 billion. The company currently serves 7.5 million subscribers in Cambodia.
