Phnom Penh (FN), Nov. 18 – Prime Minister Hun Sen stated Monday that do not hope for the reinstatements of former CNRP commune seats, as the CNRP was dissolved.
Speaking to graduates of Human Resource University, Prime Minister informed that the kingdom will hold commune council elections in May 2022 and national elections in July 2023.
The Supreme Court dissolved the CNRP last year in the wake of its leader Kem Sokha’s arrest on treason charges, following a leaked video with his confession that he has implemented the order of a foreign country, by attempting color revolution following the model of former Yugoslavia and Serbia.
In the 2017 commune elections, the CPP won 1,156 communes and the CNRP took 489, while the Khmer National United Party won one commune.
Then, the National Election Committee reallocated more than 5,000 of the dissolved CNRP’s old commune seats to the ruling CPP and other parties, including FUNCINPEC, Khmer National United Party, Cambodian Nationality Party, Cambodia Youth Party, and the Cambodia Indigenous People Democracy Party.
“The distribution of seats was made in accordance with the Law on the Amendment on Commune/Sangkat Council Elections in Article 20 and Article 21,” the National Election Committee’s statement read.
