Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 5 – During the official visit of Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen to Vietnam, both sides reiterated ASEAN’s positions on the South China Sea in recent joint statements, especially the Joint Communique of the 52nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM52).

“Both sides expressed the view that the current tension must soon be resolved peacefully in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS),”  Cambodia-Vietnam wrote in the joint statement on Saturday.

Disputes in the South China Sea between Beijing and other four countries, including Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines have escalated after China built an artificial island on the territory.

The four countries claim parts of the 3.5 million square kilometer area with China, while China claims about 90 percent of the sea itself.
