Phnom Penh (FN), July 30 – The Royal Government of Cambodia has decided to impose a three-point penalty on the Chungyuen Plastic Manifold Co., Ltd. for importing 83 containers of plastic waste to Cambodia, according to the joint press release of the Ministry of Environment and the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia released on 30 July 2019.

The Government ordered Chungyuen Company to bring all the waste back to the country of origin; and to pay a fine of over 1,300 million Khmer Riel (over USD 320,000) into the national budget by 24 August 2019.

According to the same source, Chungyuen Company, headed by Cambodian identified as Suon Luk, imported 83 containers of waste, weighing nearly 1,600 tons, from the United States and Canada into Cambodia.

The first container arrived the kingdom in September 2018 and the last time in January 2019.

According to the joint press release, 70 of containers (1,300 tons) came from the US, and 13 containers (270 tons) from Canada. All of them,40' high-cube containers, have passed through Singapore (22 times), Malaysia (twice), and Vietnam (triple) before reaching Cambodia.

According to the inspection using the laboratory equipment of the Ministry of Environment, the plastic wastes contain no other harmful substances.
