Phnom Penh (FN), June 8 – The National Election Committee (NEC)'s official result on third mandate councils election released this Saturday, 8 June, indicated that the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 3,484 posts of municipal, district and khan; while the Khmer National United Party (KNUP) won 38 and FUNCINPEC 33 respectively.

It also showed that the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 550 seats among the total 559 of capital-provincial council posts; Khmer National United Party (KNUP) won six seats and FUNCINPEC three seats respectively.

Cambodian People’s Party supported the results of the third mandate councils election, which was held free, fair, and just and in accordance to the constitutions and laws of Cambodia, as well as regulations and procedures of the NEC, according to the CPP’s statement dated Saturday.

“Over 11,500 eligible commune and sangkat councilors went to cast their votes independently and accountably with neutral and safe atmosphere,” the statement underlined.

The statement continued that: “The third mandate councils election marks a new history that reflects the kingdom’s commitment to adhering to peace, liberal multi-party democracy, and development.”

Cambodia’s third mandate councils election was held on 26 May 2019 from 7 a.m until 3 p.m. The NEC claimed that elections were free, fair and transparent and that the electoral campaign went smoothly, without violence or complaints, from May 17 to May 24.

According to the NEC, Cambodia has 559 posts of capital and provincial councilors, and 3,555 posts of municipal, district and khan; 11,572 eligible commune and sangkat councilors to vote at 203 polling stations nationwide.

NEC spokesman Dim Sovannarom said seven political parties – Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Khmer National United Party (KNUP), FUNCINPEC, the Cambodian Nationality Party (CNP), the Khmer Youth Party (CYP), the Khmer Will Party (KWP), and the Khmer Republican Party (KRP) – registered for the election, and that over 1,000 from groups such as the Union of Youth Federations in Cambodia and NGOs registered to observe.
