Phnom Penh (FN), May 27 - The National Election Committee (NEC)'s preliminary result released Sunday indicated that the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won majority votes in the Third Mandate Councils Election 2019, followed by FUNCINPEC and the Khmer National United Party (KNUP) respectively.

Cambodia’s third mandate councils election was held on 26 May 2019 from 7 a.m until 3 p.m. The NEC claimed that elections were free, fair and transparent.

At least, seven councilors among 11,572 eligible commune and sangkat councilors were absent. One of them had an accident, NEC vice-chairman Nuth Sokhom said on Sunday.

According to the NEC, Cambodia has 559 posts of capital and provincial councilors, and 3,555 seats of municipal, district and Khan, and 11,572 eligible commune and sangkat councilors to vote at 203 polling stations nationwide.

NEC spokesman Dim Sovannarom said seven political parties – Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Khmer National United Party (KNUP), FUNCINPEC, the Cambodian Nationality Party (CNP), the Khmer Youth Party (CYP), the Khmer Will Party (KWP), and the Khmer Republican Party (KRP) – registered for the election, and that over 1,000 from groups such as the Union of Youth Federations in Cambodia and NGOs registered to observe.

The NEC announced on 24 May that the third mandate councils electoral campaign went smoothly, without violence or complaints, from May 17 to May 24.
