Beijing, China (FN), April 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc pledged to strengthen cooperation, particularly complete border demarcation in 2019 and make border areas peaceful and developed, speaking in a bilateral meeting prior to the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing from 25 to 29 April 2019.

Prime Minister Hun Sen stressed that Cambodia-Vietnam strategies are to transform all former battlefields in Cambodia into a strategic and market development zone, and to transform all the border areas into zone of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc highly commended Prime Minister Hun Sen’s leadership for securing peace, stability, and development for the kingdom and her people.

The duo also discussed various bilateral, regional, and international issues of common interests and concerns for the mutual benefits of the two nations. Both pledged to promote bilateral trade to USD 5 billion by 2020. In 2017, the volume of bilateral trade reached USD 3.8 billion, an increase of 25 per cent over the previous year. In 2018, the figure rose to nearly USD 4.7 billion, up a further 24 per cent.

Cambodia-Vietnam share border of 1,270 km. The two sides had finished resolving 84 per cent of controversial borderlines, in which 314 of 375 markers had been demarcated, while the 16 per cent left is being negotiated.

2019 will mark the 52nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations of Cambodia and Viet Nam.
