Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 22 – The opposition group is on their new mission to request the United States to remove Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), a duty-free treatment for least developed countries including Cambodia, according to Cambodian People's Party spokesman Sok Eysan.

The spokesman told Fresh News on Friday that the new wicked mission of the opposition is headed by Mu Sochua, former parliamentarian of the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), and a union leader Rong Chhun.

CPP spokesman Sok Eysan called the mission “evil”, which serves as personal revenge than the national interests.

“The opposition’s mission aims at inciting the US to pressure the Royal Government in the hope for convicted Sam Rainsy to repatriate without being jailed,” said the spokesman, adding that “Such action would contradict the court’s ruling.”

Eysan claimed that the opposition's push for the US to withdraw GSP trade scheme from Cambodia will be a complete failure due to the lacks of evidences to convince the US.

US President Donald Trump, on 23 March 2018, agreed to extend GSP for Cambodia. The restoration of US’s GSP became effective a month later in April, renewing access to duty-free privileges for Cambodian exporters for three consecutive years from 2018-2020.

Cambodia is one of 120 nations included in the US’s GSP programme, which was established in 1974 with the aim of promoting economic growth in the developing world.
