Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 7 - Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that 7 January is the second birthday of Cambodian people, the historic truth that no one can sham or destroy, addressing to approximately 70,000 participants at Phnom Penh’s Olympic Stadium during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Kingdom’s liberation from Khmer Rouge regime on 7 January 1979.
“The victory saved life of millions of Cambodians awaiting death in a timely manner. It closed the darkest page in the Cambodian history and ushered in a new era of independence, freedom, democracy, and social progress for our sad nation; and provided every rights and freedom to our people to own their destiny,” said Prime Minister Hun Sen
“7-January-1979 victory made active contribution to peace and stability in the region. The Cambodian people are naming the 7-January-1979 their second birthdays, and were there no 7-January victory, there would not be everything we do today,” he added.
The ruling party leader’s remarks were made after some opposition activists in Australia protested Saturday claiming that “the 7 January was the day that the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia.”
The Premier explained that the victory would not be possible without a combination of two forces: Khmer solidarity forces under the leadership of the Cambodian People's Party and the great support from the Vietnamese voluntary army.
