Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 7 - Approximately seventy thousands of Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) members and supporters, on Monday morning, gathered at the Phnom Penh’s Olympic Stadium to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Kingdom’s liberation from Khmer Rouge regime on 7 January 1979.

The celebration was presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen and his wife, President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin, Senate President Say Chhum, and foreign ambassadors to Cambodia.

Thousands of people stood in formation to create the national flag of Cambodia; others sat to create representations of pigeons, an icon of peace, and slogans like “long live the Kingdom of Cambodia”. There were also many Cambodian ruling party flags and parades that presented Cambodian development on all sectors from provinces across the kingdom to mark the 40th-anniversary.

CPP supporters as well as almost all Cambodians, considered 7 January 1979 as the "victory" of Cambodians who overthrew the Pol Pot regime, ending the darkest period in Cambodia that killed almost three millions of her people. The Victory Day 7 January is indeed the opening day of the new era of independence, liberty, democracy and social progress.

Head of the ruling party, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the celebration on Victory Day serves as the tributes for all the fallen Cambodian heroes, and volunteered Vietnamese forces for topping Pol Pot regime and prevented the regime from happening again.
