Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 12 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen calls for joint action to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly among the homosexuals, whose group has the highest prevalence of transmission, addressing to nearly 18,000 workers from 23 factories in Kompong Speu province.
The premier expressed concern over the resurgence of HIV/AIDS in Cambodia and called on people, especially those with partners, to protect themselves from AIDS.
According to Prime Minister, Cambodia set goals to reach zero rate of HIV in 2025, whereas the rate of HIV now is 0.6 per cent.
Ly Penh Sun, Head of the National Center for HIV, AIDS, Dermatology, and STDs (NCHADS) told Fresh News today that HIV/AIDS among the homosexual group has increased by 2.3% per cent in 2014 and continued to increase in 2018, yet no specific figure of HIV has been determined.
“About one million per annum is killed by AIDS and about 1.8 million are infected by HIV per year,” said Chhim Sarath, Asia Bureau Chief of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) adding that, “There is an estimated 67,000 people living with HIV in Cambodia.”
