(Phnom Penh): Chum Sounry, spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, stated that the Thai Foreign Ministry’s public statement about “bringing Cambodia back to talks” was merely aimed at restoring trust.
Speaking at a press conference that evening, he raised concerns over Thailand’s provocative military actions along the border, calling them a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement and a serious threat to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
He stated, "Public statement by Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs about bringing Cambodia back to talks aimed at claiming credit only. These statements are unfounded and overlook Cambodia's genuine efforts to de-escalate tensions and uphold peace."
Cambodia categorically rejects Thailand’s characterization of its military actions as proportionate and defensive, the spokesperson underscored. “This narrative is misleading and fail to deflect the reality on the ground. It was the Thai armed forces that initiated the recent escalation through repeated incursion into Cambodian territory.” He stressed that Cambodia has acted strictly in defence of its sovereignty in full accordance with international law.
He also addressed Thai allegations that Cambodia was spreading false information, describing them as baseless and as deliberate attempts to divert attention from the truth while portraying Thailand's own provocative actions as justified.
The spokesperson concluded by urging Thailand to refrain from politicizing the information space. He reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to open, responsible and verifiable communication, and welcomed the involvement of neutral third parties, including ASEAN and international observers.
