Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 1 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet underscored that in Cambodia, the term "Mae" is used in various contexts to underscore the deep respect and high value accorded to women.

The premier spoke on Thursday (Aug. 1) at the Pinnacle Entrepreneur Forum and 2024 AWEN Award at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

“Cambodia uses the term “Mea”, which can be found everywhere in our society, to emphasize the essential definition of the utmost important place on women, as this term links with the highest honour, position and role across both private and public sectors,” the premier underscored.

Throughout Cambodia's rich and vibrant history, women have consistently risen to positions of power and influence, leaving a profound impact on our nation's development.

Samdech Thipadei continued that the women contributions extend beyond traditional gender roles, showcasing exceptional leadership in various spheres. As a matter of fact, our first sovereign was Queen Soma, also known as Liuyi, who reigned in the Kingdom of Funan. Her strong leadership and military prowess united the kingdom and expanded its influence through trade and diplomacy, setting a precedent for future female leaders. Other remarkable women, such as Queen Jayarajadevi, Princess Soma, Queen Indradevi and so on.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei added that their stories serve as an inspiration, reminding us of strength, intelligence and resilience that women bring to leadership. Building upon this rich heritage, we recognize the immense contribution of women throughout history, not only as queens and leaders, but as entrepreneurs, innovators, caregivers and community builders.
