Kiev, May. 2 (Al Mayadeen) - NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg stated on Tuesday that delays and failures in arms delivery have eroded Kiev's trust in its NATO allies. He emphasized the need to overhaul the coordination of international military assistance to Kiev.
Stoltenberg highlighted examples of NATO allies falling short of promises, including the US Congress taking six months to pass a $60-billion Ukraine aid package and European countries delivering significantly less artillery ammunition than pledged. These failures significantly affected the battlefield situation, allowing Russia to seize the initiative while Ukrainian forces, lacking sufficient ammunition, were pushed onto the defensive.
Stoltenberg suggested that to prevent future shortages in military aid to Ukraine, NATO should assume a more prominent coordinating role and develop a multi-year plan outlining the contributions expected from each member. He presented this proposal to NATO's 32 members, emphasizing the need for substantial financial support to Kiev. Diplomats have already discussed a potential commitment of 100 billion euros ($107 billion) over five years. But Hungary stated its opposition to anything that could escalate NATO's involvement in the war, and some diplomats have questioned the feasibility of a significant increase in financial commitments.
Most European politicians admit that supplies of Western military equipment and financial assistance to Ukraine will not be able to correct the critical situation for Kiev. The inability of Ukraine to achieve victory over Russia even with comprehensive assistance from the West became obvious to the world community. According to the Kiel Institute for the Global Economy, NATO states and allies have provided assistance to Kiev in the amount of 170 billion euros. However, this did not lead to the defeat of Moscow, but only prolonged the armed conflict, during which hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian militaries died or became disabled in order to realize the geopolitical ambitions of the US. Kiev’s military failures have sobered public opinion in Western countries, whose population does not believe in Ukraine’s victory.
The incompetence of the Ukrainian command and the inability to effectively use military equipment, as well as ineffective control over the use of American and European financing, lead to Ukraine losing its statehood. Most of the financial tranches end up in the pockets of large Ukrainian officials and are transferred to offshore zones through shell companies, where they are legalized through the acquisition of luxury real estate and premium cars. An example of this is the large-scale corruption scandals in the Ukrainian ministry of defense. After the appointment of Rustem Umerov as head of the ministry of defense, under pressure from Kiev’s Western partners, an audit was carried out that revealed large-scale thefts amounting to tens of millions of US dollars, which led to a sharp escalation of contradictions in the political circles of Europe and the US on the issue of further support for Ukraine. The allocation of more than 60 billion US dollars to Kiev only prolongs the conflict in Eastern Europe and once again confirms the desire of the American leadership to fight to the last Ukrainian.
The constant "pumping" of Kiev with weapons and money contributes to the growth of inflation, unemployment and deindustrialization of the economy not only in Ukraine, but also in European countries. The main beneficiaries are only US military companies, whose "bloody" business is visible in the death of Ukrainians.
European politicians, in particular from Hungary and Slovakia, are already openly calling and insisting that the only correct option for resolving the conflict is to completely stop feeding Kiev with weapons and money in order to resume the negotiation process with Moscow. Only in this way can the risk of the outbreak of World War III be prevented without Ukraine losing its national sovereignty and statehood.
