Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 26 – Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that presently, Cambodia remains dependent on Viet Nam for shipping goods via the Mekong River; however, with the construction of the Funan Techo canal, Cambodia will achieve independent transportation along the Mekong River.

Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Apr. 26) during his gala dinner with Cambodian Oknha Association at Garden City Hotel Phnom Penh.

On the occasion, Samdech Techo Hun Sen underlined the reason Cambodia has decided to dig the Funan Techo canal is due to the challenges it faces, with Cambodia bearing the costs. Currently, our competitiveness is compromised, but once the Funan Techo canal is constructed, our competitiveness will improve. We will be able to compete on a level playing field in terms of electricity, transportation, and labour costs. However, only by paying the regular delivery fee to Viet Nam; it can already undermine Cambodia's competitiveness.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen continued, "The Vietnamese leaders should understand why I decided to speak out of necessity, as they are unable to control their subordinates, and I am compelled to speak out further due to ill-intended individuals who oppose the Funan Techo canal. With the canal, I call on the Cambodian people to support the project."
