Kuala Lumpur (FN), Feb. 27 – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his pleasure at welcoming Samdech Thipadei as a friend and continuing the great relations that Malaysia have had with Samdech Techo Hun Sen for many decades.

The two prime ministers held joint statement on Tuesday (Feb. 27) and presided over the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between National Bank of Cambodia and Bank Negara Malaysia on Cooperation in Area of Financial Innovation and Payment Systems.

Anwar Ibrahim underlined that he has had very fruitful discussions with Samdech Thipadei on a number of issues and he further added that the signing of this understanding agreement between both governors of the central bank is meaningful because this has been one of the pillars in dealing issues or problems with currency.

The Malaysian premier continued that Malaysia has had relative success with China and Thailand and the cooperation with Cambodia would lessen the burden of only tied to the US dollar.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted the rapid pace of progress on talks on food security, collaboration research, investment, halal food industry, renewable energy and high-tech industry including EV and AI. Anwar Ibrahim underlined that the customs departments will facilitate the movement of goods and both countries have already started the initiatives discussion of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by both customs and will finalize soon.

The Malaysian prime minister underscored that Cambodia and Malaysia have huge potential in terms of boosting trade volume, palm oil, white rice, and the trade ministries of both countries will use the joint technical committee platform to address these challenges and find solutions. For both trade and tourism, investment has been bad, but Cambodia and Malaysia should expect more investment into Cambodia and from Cambodian into Malaysia.

Regarding the connection of the transmission lines, the Malaysian prime minister pointed out that both ministries have been paying attention to the construction of 1000 km of seabed energy pipelines, facilitating the transmission of renewable energy from Cambodia and Laos to Singapore.

Anwar Ibrahim expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Hun Manet and the Cambodian government for assisting Malaysia in solving the issue of Malaysian victims due to job scams. He also thanked the police and immigration officials for their attention and support.

He added that Malaysia also worked together with the Muslim community with Cambodia’s support for whatever training required, to ensure their positive and meaningful role in Cambodia.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim continued that there are currently 47 direct flights per week from Cambodia to Kuala Lumpur and from Kuala Lumpur to Cambodia. He confirmed that he had agreed to explore this route to expand flights as there is a huge potential for both countries.

Anwar Ibrahim underlined that he and Samdech Thipadei have acknowledged the fact that ASEAN has recorded impressive collaboration in a number of fields, but intra-trade and investment have certainly profoundly lacked and have to ensure that this would be enhanced so that it will be beneficial to both countries.
